Research Interests and Professional experience: I have administrative experience working with surveillance and control of zoonotic diseases such as Salmonella and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. I have furthermore administered antibiotic residue control programs and the control of infectious diseases in trade in animals and animal products. I have been drafting legislation in the above areas as well as in areas covering slaughter and meat production. I have professional experience as a large animal practitioner and as a food safety veterinary inspector of all animal products for human and non-human use. My research areas of expertise are in the fields of epidemiology, population ecology, bacteriology and general pathology. My studies have focused on the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture and its impact on the evolution of antibiotic resistance in commensal and pathogenic bacteria. I have developed extensive databases describing the temporal, farm-specific and management specific factors governing the emergence and persistence of antibiotic resistance in enteric bacteria in bovine animals. I am currently evaluating management strategies that would minimize the emergence of antibiotic resistance in pre-weaned calves. I use cluster analytic techniques for dealing with multi-dimensional data and have used the clusters as outcomes in multi-level statistical modeling. I am also developing a risk analysis approach that encompasses the multi-dimensional exposure pathways for bacteriological risks for the human population. My mission and vision is to optimize animal welfare, animal health and public health in a sustainable financially sound agricultural practice. I would like to develop animal husbandry systems that optimize animal health and welfare in order to minimize prophylactic and therapeutic antibiotic use, since I consider that antibiotic prophylactic use is treating a sick management system and not sick animals. I am further interested in working with zoonotic hazards from 'stable to table' and would like to further veterinary involvement in pre- and post-harvest food safety research and surveillance. I would like to determine the impact of exposure pathways of zoonotic bacteria to the human population in order to enhance our knowledge of the multi-dimensional population dynamics of our food animal production ecosystem.
